1. Beach Time Jar: Remove the inner lid, paint the jar with a design of your choice. Place sand inside, and add a candle on top. Decorate jar with a hemp chord.

2. Pasta Soup Jar: Remove inner lid, and paint the jar with a design of your choice. Fill first half with dry lentils and beans, then add bowtie pasta on top. Add a bow and directions for 3 bean pasta soup.

3. Spa Jar: Remove inner lid, and paint the jar with a bath theme. Fill with bath salts. Add a loofah or sponge tied to the outside.

Painting Supplies & Tools:

Medium mason jar
Martha Stewart Crafts™ paint in colors of choice
Paintbrush

DIRECTIONS:
1. Paint the inner lid of mason jars in one color. Allow to dry.
2. Squeeze other color of paint inside mason jar and swirl around until coated and pour out the excess. Allow to dry.

Contrast A (White Sparkle) 1 skein

Size G or 6 crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

DIRECTIONS:Gauge: 14 sc and 15 rows = 4"Note: When removing hook from st, pull out a long loop of yarn from rem st to ensure project does not unravel. With A, ch 2.Rnd 1: (1 sc. 3 hdc) in 2nd ch from hook. Remove hook. Make a slip knot with B and draw up through same sp as previous sts. Ch 1. (1 sc. 3 hdc) in same sp.

A 50’s-inspired dress made of mesh netting, red burlap and speaker fabric earns $1,000 Grand Prize!

Grand Prize: Rachel Brookman of Rocky Hill, Conn. $1,000, Simplicity Deluxe Rotary Cutting Machine, Sidewinder and Electric Hand Held Felter

First Runner-up: Eva Zapata of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif. $500

The contest, hosted by Project Runway’s Christopher Straub, asked entrants to rely on their creativity to
create sewn projects using utility fabrics. Straub provided tips and inspiration along the way through a
five-part web series on YouTube: http://bit.ly/StraubPL

More than 500 entries were submitted during the month of September and ranged from fantastical to
ultra-modern. After two rounds of judging, the top 20 entries were shipped to Jo-Ann headquarters for
final judging by a panel of sewing experts.

After the final round of judging, Rachel received the top honor. To earn the $1,000 Grand Prize,
she created a “50’s-inspired wiggle with some edge” out of mesh netting, red burlap and speaker fabric.
She incorporated feathers, burlap and speaker fabric to create a mock pill box hat to finish the look.

Eva earned First Runner-up honors with the custom vinyl camera bag she had created for a friend. The Second Runner-up, Kristi, created a mermaid-style wedding gown using waffle weave, voile and sport nylon.

“We were in awe of the creativity and craftsmanship that the entrants demonstrated after they were given
such a unique task. It was hard for our judges to narrow the field to 20 finalists and even harder for them
to choose a winner,” said Nicole Long, manager of inspiration for Jo-Ann. “We were so impressed and
inspired by the finalists that we’ve decided to feature a selection of them in the Jo-Ann app for iPad’s Idea
Center.”
